What Inspired Me

There are many reasons we chose horror as our film opening. For me, horror is my favorite genre overall. In my opinion, horror films can never be boring. Horror films keep the audience on the edge of their seats. I especially like how the producers writers and directors can create such complex plots while making it scary. Although most horror films seem silly, the really well done movies can be entertaining and fascinating. Horror movies combine fiction and real situations to make it seem more relatable to the audience. Plots target common fears and prays on the emotions and statistics of the audience's emotions.
My favorite horror movie is IT chapter one and IT chapter two. The actors, the plot, the humor, the details, and the thrill combined makes it one of the most entertaining horror movies and my personal favorite. The beginning of the first movie is ominous. It is a rainy day and two brothers, Georgie and Bill decide to make a paper boat and send it down the stream following the road. Bill, the older brother is sick in bed but encourages Georgie to go out and sail it. Georgie goes down into a dark basement to grab wax for the boat which adds to the already ominous dark rainy day. Georgie finally goes outside to send the boat afloat. Creepy children's music is playing the background as he chases the boat down the road. The boat falls into a drain and Georgie tries to grab it. This is when the Georgie is confronted by the scary clown, IT, hiding in the drain. Immediately shocking the audience. Soon IT tricks Georgie into reaching his hand down the drain where he bites Georgies arm off, leaving him screaming and bloody in the street. He pulls the rest of Georgie down the drain and there is a final shot of the street with blood and rain water flowing into the drain. This is the opening scene, where the title screen is shown. After that it switches to a scene months after Georgie went missing and the film begins.
I think this opening is genius. It is creepy and makes Georgie so like-able. He is a young boy just wanting to play in the rain. His innocent nature and his connection with his brother makes the audience immediately shocked when his arm is taken off by a very scary clown in a sewage drain. It makes the viewers want to know more about what happened to Georgie and where he went. It also makes them very curious of what and who this clown was and why was he in the drain.
I really enjoyed this film and I think the opening is inspiring for us. Not starting immediately scary and drawing in the crowd with a likable character before leading to terror is definitely a strategy I want to use. It is no wonder why IT was such a popular movie and the characters made the movie even better. Im inspired to make our opening simple, yet horrifying.
